It’s dark, cold, and the animals have hushed; you can feel the metal from your deadly blades underneath your hands as you crouch inside the brush of the enemies territory and you’re the only one. “30 seconds until minions spawn.” The voice echoes in your ears and you looked to the left and see your partner stall to a creeping stop – and on the map, your team is in position. “Minions have spawned.” You rush forward, your partner goes to the shadows, and your hungry blade connects with your opponent. “First Blood!” The screen lights up with your kill as you rush forward, then, “Ally has been defeated!” You turn to see your partner slain. “Ally defeated!” You look to the map and see another teammate fall, but you rush forward, pushing through the minions to see the base. “Ally defeated.” Another one. Now it’s only two left. All of a sudden. “Really…?” Your teammate stops fighting. Then “TEAMMATE2 DISCONNECTED!” Now you’re all alone for another 30 seconds until your team regenerates to continue fighting. “TEAMMATE2 RECONNECTED!” Yes! You rush into the base, thinking your help is back but then, “N00bs! Why don’t you give up already?! Better to give up an already lost fight then to lose like n00bs!”
I can’t stand that. I’m a level 30 in a game I play – Level 30 being the highest you can go, I made a new character to play with a friend that had never played – and I was being called a n00b. A n00b! I’m far from one, but what made me madder, was this level 12 player was continuously knocking down the fighting team that he was on, and not doing a thing to help the situation. I was horrified to see two of the players stop playing and return to the base and not want to play anymore. How humiliating is it to not be able to kick a player out of a game that you hosted and to see your team stop trying to win the game?!
I decided to take action; first I asked him to stop, and if he wasn’t going to play to please leave because he was ruining the integrity of the players and game. He called me a very untasteful name and proceeded to /all chat the entire game room, calling his own teammates n00bs. That gave the other team fuel to the fire and started a riot of “n00b warfare.” After ten minutes, a teammate proposed a Surrender. Heartbroken, I accepted the Surrender and the game was defeated. Right after the game, it brought us into a chat room with all our stats, and Teammate2 decided to continue his rant on them being n00bs.
Now, I take pride in helping newbs; I believe we are all newbs in any game until we get the hang of it, and it’s amazing when you find that one, rare player who is willing to play with you, guide you and give you tips on the game until that happens – and I like being that player. Also, I love it when a friend asks if I can play a game with them and they restart to level up with you – I’m that friend. But then, there’s that one guy, maybe even a set, that ruins the ambition and excitement of the game, hurting other players feelings, maybe even doing a lot more damage than that.
One of the lower level players asked me a question last night after a game: What is the difference between “n00b” and “newb” because I told he was a newb, not a n00b? I told the fellow the truth: A newb is basically short for Newbie, which is a player who wants to learn by asking simple questions, rather than spamming about wanting things and such, and n00b is a spammer who wants everyone to do everything for them, rather than do things on their own. I told him that another difference between the two is that newbs are just completely new to the site and just need a little guidance for a bit, whereas a n00b is just lazy and annoying.
After the game, I sat and thought about the words due reference and I couldn’t figure out why they were so infuriating and insulting – they were just words afterall – but the point was there in just a few letters. I just think it’s funny how people can sit and call people n00bs when they’re acting like one themselves. Point to plan; don’t insult people who aren’t good at something when they’re first starting off – because you and every other gamer was a newb at some point too, and it only make you look less attractive with all those VH (Verbal Harassment) docks in your book.
